{"id":45,"date":"2010-09-20T09:07:08","date_gmt":"2010-09-20T16:07:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mythmakersent.com\/blog\/?p=45"},"modified":"2014-02-04T17:59:07","modified_gmt":"2014-02-05T01:59:07","slug":"why-is-writing-the-red-headed-step-child","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mythmakersent.com\/blog\/2010\/09\/20\/why-is-writing-the-red-headed-step-child\/","title":{"rendered":"Why is Writing the Red Headed Step Child?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb_share_1\" style=\"float: right; margin-left: 10px;;width: 55px;\" name=\"fb_share\"><div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div><script src=\"http:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/all.js#appId=125029517579627&amp;xfbml=1\"><\/script><fb:like href=\"https:\/\/www.mythmakersent.com\/blog\/2010\/09\/20\/why-is-writing-the-red-headed-step-child\/\" send=\"false\" layout=\"box_count\" width=\"55\" show_faces=\"false\" font=\"arial\"><\/fb:like><\/div><p>I&#8217;ll admit, I&#8217;m in new territory submitting my script in lieu of my finished films to competitions. \u00a0And as my feature action\/adventure tale of swashbuckler hero-types ACTUALLY progresses in the competitions, I&#8217;m amazed at the perceived insignificance of it. \u00a0I truly think writers get the short end of the stick.<\/p>\n<p>Yes &#8211; there are 100s of competitions out there that really don&#8217;t mean squat to an aspiring filmmaker. \u00a0The same is true of writing comps or film festivals. \u00a0However, there are a few that honestly open doors for new talent. \u00a0Here are the top 5 competitions my research has determined to mean anything.<\/p>\n<p>#1 Nicholl&#8217;s Fellowship &#8211; Ran by the academy and open only to non-professional writers (you can&#8217;t earn your living writing to win this fellowship). \u00a0Even quarterfinalists get industry attention. \u00a0HOWEVER &#8211; they got 6404 script entries this year. \u00a0Wow.<\/p>\n<p>#2 Austin Film Festival &#8211; 17 years and still running.
