{"id":68,"date":"2010-09-28T13:22:48","date_gmt":"2010-09-28T20:22:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mythmakersent.com\/blog\/?p=68"},"modified":"2010-10-26T10:12:27","modified_gmt":"2010-10-26T17:12:27","slug":"terra-incognita-how-the-script-came-to-be","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mythmakersent.com\/blog\/2010\/09\/28\/terra-incognita-how-the-script-came-to-be\/","title":{"rendered":"Terra Incognita \u2013 how the script came to be."},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb_share_1\" style=\"float: right; margin-left: 10px;;width: 55px;\" name=\"fb_share\"><div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div><script src=\"http:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/all.js#appId=125029517579627&amp;xfbml=1\"><\/script><fb:like href=\"https:\/\/www.mythmakersent.com\/blog\/2010\/09\/28\/terra-incognita-how-the-script-came-to-be\/\" send=\"false\" layout=\"box_count\" width=\"55\" show_faces=\"false\" font=\"arial\"><\/fb:like><\/div><p>I should start out by saying &#8220;Terra Incognita&#8221; is a passion project. \u00a0Ironically, it&#8217;s not your typical, &#8220;I-have-a-personal-drama-story-I-have-to-tell&#8221; passion project. \u00a0It was my guilty pleasure of loving old time action-adventure high-concept fantasy films.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who knows me would classify me as a history nut. \u00a0For a time I thought I was going to make historical documentaries and even spent a good 5 years studying archaeology in pursuit of it. \u00a0But the narrative bug wouldn&#8217;t leave me alone, so I returned to the world of stories clearly influenced by my old field of study.<\/p>\n<p>Terra Incognita was originally going to be my Thesis script from USC&#8217;s graduate program. \u00a0We wrote the synopsis, but something didn&#8217;t click. \u00a0We chose instead to develop something smaller scale, something new graduates could tackle in the Indie Market and raise funds for (A Touch of Magic). But high concept (and big budget) movies are in my blood, so I wrote it anyways.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mythmakersent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/IMG_5922.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-70\" title=\"IMG_5922\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mythmakersent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/IMG_5922-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Mapping the World\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mythmakersent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/IMG_5922-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mythmakersent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/IMG_5922-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is inspired by the memory of Men. \u00a0You know the type. \u00a0They burly, danger-seeking, tough as nails salty men who just don&#8217;t seem to exist any more. \u00a0It&#8217;s also inspired by the actual events of the discovery of Easter Island. \u00a0In fact, the original title was Rapa Nui: Land&#8217;s End &#8211; but man does that title suck. \u00a0I vaguely mentioned to Zack Luna, a Sales Rep from Kathy Morgan, Int&#8217;l that I was consider changing it to Terra Incognita &#8211; he said &#8220;now that, I can sell&#8221;. \u00a0I knew he was on to something. \u00a0A Good Title = a possible read. \u00a0All any aspiring writer could hope for, right?<\/p>\n<p>Terra Incognita, for the uninitiated, is the mythical southern land mass the Old World believed existed in the unexplored areas of the world. \u00a0It was supposed to balance out the globe and be home to all the legendary creatures of mythology (hey, they have to live somewhere, right?). \u00a0Old nautical maps have it\u00a0scribbled\u00a0in the corners. \u00a0Or as wikipedia calls it:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>An\u00a0<a title=\"Urban legend\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Urban_legend\">urban legend<\/a> claims that\u00a0<a title=\"Cartographer\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cartographer\">cartographers<\/a> labelled such regions with &#8220;<a title=\"Here be dragons\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Here_be_dragons\">Here be dragons<\/a>&#8220;. Although cartographers did claim that fantastic beasts (including large serpents) existed in remote corners of the world and depicted such as decoration on their maps, only one known surviving map, the\u00a0<em><a title=\"Lenox Globe\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lenox_Globe\">Lenox Globe<\/a><\/em>, in the collection of the\u00a0<a title=\"New York Public Library\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_Public_Library\">New York Public Library<\/a>,<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Terra_incognita#cite_note-0\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> actually says &#8220;Here be dragons&#8221; (using the\u00a0<a title=\"Latin\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Latin\">Latin<\/a> form &#8220;HIC SVNT DRACONES&#8221;).<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Terra_incognita#cite_note-1\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> However, ancient Roman and Medieval cartographers did use the phrase\u00a0<em><a title=\"Hic sunt leones\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hic_sunt_leones\">HIC SVNT LEONES<\/a><\/em> (literally,\u00a0<em>Here are lions<\/em>) when denoting unknown territories on maps.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, terra incognita may also refer to the imaginary continent\u00a0<a title=\"Terra Australis\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Terra_Australis\">Terra Australis<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_71\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mythmakersent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/IMG_5927.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-71\" title=\"IMG_5927\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mythmakersent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/IMG_5927-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Sea Creatures\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mythmakersent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/IMG_5927-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mythmakersent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/IMG_5927-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-71\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Old nautical maps<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The old school adventurers truly believed in its existance. \u00a0They scoured the globe looking for it.<\/p>\n<p><em>What if they found something?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That is what inspired &#8220;Terra Incognita&#8221;. \u00a0The what if. \u00a0And the ability to say something about the ecological ruin of Easter Island. \u00a0It really is a lesson to our entire planet about resource conservation.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_72\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mythmakersent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Easter-Island_Tongariki_colored-Moai.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-72\" title=\"Easter Island_Tongariki_colored Moai\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mythmakersent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Easter-Island_Tongariki_colored-Moai-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mythmakersent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Easter-Island_Tongariki_colored-Moai-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.mythmakersent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Easter-Island_Tongariki_colored-Moai-682x1024.jpg 682w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-72\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Moai Heads - the largest carvings of the ancient world made with stone tools.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The script has done better in competitions than I could EVER have expected. \u00a0We just heard back today that we are FINALISTS in the <a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/www.writemovies.com\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=488&amp;lang=en&amp;Itemid=147\" target=\"_blank\">WriteMovies.com 25th International Writing Competition<\/a>. \u00a0We are travelling to Austin in October to meet with panelists at the Austin FF Conference.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll be blogging about that experience soon!
